Set in the Salem-like town of Bethel, The Year of the Witching is an intense, dark and frightening tale of girl’s search for her identity . Born out of a wedlock to a dark-skinned father and the daughter of an apostle, Immanuelle Moore is child cursed at birth. Immanuelle never knew her mother but when she find’s her mothers journal in the Darkwoods, sinister secrets are revealed and four plagues are promised.

The book draws inspiration from the 16th-century Puritan society and the wild witch-hunts that were conducted at that time. Alexis Henderson paints a vivid picture of the pain and loss experienced by the women under the patriarchy and their rebellion against it. She does not hold back on the blood and gore either while describing the horrors that lurk in the Darkwoods. Reading this book really makes you think of what a life under a totalitarian theocratic oppression would feel like, and the feeling is absolutely terrifying! Although the book explores some heavy themes like racism, abuse and misogyny, it blends in just enough witch lore to keep keep the pages turning. If you are a fan of historical fiction and occult tale, this book might just be for you.

I know the spooky season is behind us, but between The Year of The Witching and the fourth season of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina I’m feeling all the creepy, witchy vibes!
